Transferring Power from the Engine to the Wheels: The Job of Your Car's Transmission

If you open up a transmission, you will see a series of gears lined up along a shaft. Those gears are what transfer the right amount of power from the engine to the wheels to get the vehicle moving at a certain speed. Back in the old days, a driver would move between gears using a manual shift. Today, all that work is done by your automatic transmission.

When the car starts accelerating, the torque converter inside the transmission senses the changing speed. The converter shifts the vehicle into the next upper gear. If it senses deceleration, it shifts to the next lower gear.

To keep it working smoothly, you need to have the transmission fluid changed periodically. It helps the transmission move smoothly through the gears. Always use the manufacturer's recommend schedule for changing the fluid. Have your transmission work done at the service department here at BMW of Honolulu.
